Math and Science Partnership - Southwest Pennsylvania (PDE)

The Math and Science Partnership Pennsylvania Department of Education grant was led by the Math and Science Collaborative headquartered at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. The purpose of the Math and Science Partnership Pennsylvania Department of Education grant was to increase academic achievement of students in mathematics and science through high quality, coherent, professional development that deepens teachers' content knowledge, and increases teachers' knowledge of how students learn a particular content. The project implementation plan included a number of opportunities for professional development, plus specifically designed interventions that occurred in emerging Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). These activities allowed for individualized choices for teachers; however, the focus of the professional development was algebraic reasoning in mathematics and biological understanding in science.
